Food security in developing countries plays a key role in their achievement of their economic growth plans.  so what's food security? according to the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security, is the condition in which all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. 

 

The potential of agriculture production and food security in Africa is great but food security in developing countries is dependent on much more factors.

With the population booming and urbanization growing at an all-time high, the need for food security in developing countries, food security becomes even more critical. 

The world bank estimates that by 2050 the world population will hit 9 billion, this creates the need to be even

more food secure. as a result, both large scale agriculture and unlocking the potential of small scale will play

a crucial role in feeding the world.

5 steps to improve food security in developing countries in Africa

with this in mind here are the five steps we can take to improve food security in developing countries,

1Balance food security and nutritional security

Investing on staple food security e.g. maize & beans is not enough, it's also prudent enough to make sure that we diversify our food security to nutritional foods such as having a balance of protein and carbohydrates, vitamins. investing in other farming such as fish farming fruits growing. the use of agriculture value chains plays a crucial role to enhance the life of the farmer. 

2. Adopt new technologies

Use of new technologies such as ICT in agriculture enhances the sharing of knowledge and also can automate agriculture processes. having mobile platforms that help share Agriculture knowledge with farmers to thus help improve their yields. 

mobile technologies can also be used to link small farmers to greater larger markets thus helping them improve their production as a result of the adequate market for their products.

3. Create Careers in Agriculture for the Youth and Women

One of the biggest group that can enhance food security is the youths. Making agriculture more enticing to them than white collar jobs make it better to get their potential. supporting the women or increasing the gender gap in agriculture also plays an important role, this can be done by creating a working environment that supports them.

4.Investing in infrastructure by the government

Having good infrastructure done by the government and also the private sector goes a long way in ensuring that will reduce post-harvest losses. with great infrastructure, it ensures that the farmer's products reach markets in good time this help ensure that farmers with oversupply don't lose their product due to perishability.

5. Training and Capacity Development in Agriculture

Having the techniques and skills to harness the power of agriculture is crucial towards food security. Having sufficient Sustainable Agriculture Training helps the Farmers and policymakers to get the skills to help ensure food security.
