Food Security in Developing Countries in Africa

Food security in developing countries plays a key role in their achievement of their economic growth plans.  so what's food security? according to the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security, is the condition in which all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.

why value chains are critical to sustainable intensification

A value chain can is a set of linked activities that work to add value to a product. It consists of actors and actions that improve a product while linking commodity producers to processors and markets. In agriculture, this includes activities such as product design, production, marketing, distribution and support services up to the final consumer. Value chains work best when their actors cooperate to produce higher quality products and generate more income for all participants along the chain.

Disease Control and monitoring

Health organizations remind people of the importance of regular hand washing with warm water and soap. People who developed the flu are advised to stay home to recover and avoid spreading the virus to others. Then, some people started doing something most of us hadn't seen before: wearing respiratory masks.

The CDC revised its healthcare protocols for flu prevention to include facemasks and respirators in 2010. They recommend that healthcare workers wear facemasks when in contact with potential and infected patients; and to patients who show signs of respiratory infections.

With the outbreak of Ebola, ensuring safe entrance into healthcare was particularly challenging for children, and pregnant women, as well as those without an established connection to healthcare.

Why Versed Professional Services?

I have been asked many times why I decided to start Versed Professional Services so young, fresh out of university (not so fresh) and without so much experience in the fields that the company was supposed to focus on. I have answered that question every time I has been asked but I think I should state the chronology of it all.

I did an undergraduate degree of Disaster Mitigation with a specialization in Sustainable Development. The first two years of campus I was hopeless, moving because I had to. You see, I had been selected for the course through the then JAB selection process and having attained rather good grades, I expected better from the system. I expected I would be given an opportunity to study a course of my choice. It wasn’t the case.

My fate was decided.

In September 2015, world leaders attended a special summit at the United Nations in New York to adopt Agenda 2030, including the Sustainable Development Goals (or SDGs). The 17 goals succeed the Millennium Development Goals, forged in 2000. They provide a holistic framework, applicable to all countries, aiming to eradicate poverty and deprivation, but also to grow our economies, to protect our environment, and to promote peace and good governance.

Social Protection

A brief on Social Protection

DFID defines social protection as 'a sub-set of public actions that help address risk, vulnerability and chronic poverty'. On a conceptual approach basis, social protection offers a way of thinking the requirements of groups and individuals to live a fulfilling life, the role of the state in facilitating this, and the vulnerabilities of particular groups or individuals. As a set of policies, social protection addresses interventions put in place to address vulnerabilities and factors which hinder a group or individual's capacity to enjoy a fulfilling life.

In the eyes of Social Protection, the state is a provider and protector of its citizens with a rich history in Western Europe in the Post World War II period. In its original set up, social protection was limited to supporting people in the management and mitigation of shocks and heightened vulnerabilities, but lately, social protection discussions have expanded to incorporate four types of interventions that include:

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

Drinking water hygiene and sanitaion are critical towards development but so is waste management. in most developing countries, WASH is already a major issue. with most countries struggling with chronic waters shortage, waste managment and disposal.

with growing numbers in population and conflicts, WASH is becoming even a much greater challenge to face in developing countries.

In areas prone to disasters, children are mostly vulnerable; Clean water, basic toilets and good hygiene practices are essential for their survival and development. Today, there area pproximately 2.4 billion people who do not use good sanitation, and close to a billion who do not have access to developed water sources.
